The 16 Regional team started their season with a gold medal on Sunday, January 26th at Millersville University. They beat an undefeated Spooky Nook during the semi-finals after losing to them earlier in the day. With that momentum, the girls were able to battle and win a tight first game of the championship match, 33-31. The second game of the match was won a bit easier because of their impressive endurance and will to win.
In past years, I would try to name a standout player of the day but doing so for this tournament would have been impossible. Megan Cummings and Liz Gordon set well, served consistently and worked the ball to all of our hitters. Caroline Goggin stepped up well as libero and alongside Natalie Gelber, battled in the back row. Cassidy Gallagher played smart, found the open spots and her desire to win was inevitable. Katie Sheffer served strong and was successful as both a hitter and passer. Kerianne Gilligan, Marissa Klick and Mary Kate Moeller hit with power and intent to get a kill, played scrappy and never gave up hope for the gold. An injured Michaela Curran assisted from the sidelines with encouragement, participation with the cheers and stories that kept the girls smiling.
What a great start to the season!
